Director of Campus Recreation
After a competitive nation-wide search, Bill Goa was named as the director of Campus Recreation and officially started in July 2013. As Senior Associate Director of Campus Recreation as the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, Bill was responible for the administration and coordination of all indoor and outdoor recreational sports facilities. He began that position at Nebraska in 2001, but started at the university as the Assistant Intramural Coordinator in 1985. Bill graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1983 with a B.S. in Secondary Education and received his Masters of Education from the University of South Carolina in 1985. The Campus Recreation team is excited to welcome Bill aboard!
Associate Director of Campus Recreation
Director of Fitness
Lauren has been the Associate Director for Campus Recreation / Director of Fitness at UNC-Chapel Hill since 1995. Lauren received a B.S. Degree in Health Management & Business Administration from the University of Arizona and a M.S. Degree in Health Promotion & Exercise Science at Bowling Green State University. During graduate school, Lauren worked as a graduate assistant in Campus Recreation.
Lauren continued gaining experience by working in Campus Recreation, specifically with fitness/wellness and student staff development at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio.
At work, Lauren spends most of her time establishing and maintaining fitness programs and facilities, as well as, developing campus partnerships and collaboration with Campus Health, Department of Exercise and Sport Science, Human Resources/Training & Development and employee wellness. Lauren and her husband, Mike, have three sons (Nick, Tony and Joey). She is an avid sports spectator/fan and enjoys teaching/participating in a variety of group fitness classes and believes "with a positive attitude anything is possible!"
Director of Facilities & Operations
Reggie is originally from Raleigh, NC, but has been a Tar Heel all of his life. He graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a B.A. Degree in Exercise & Sport Science (2001) and a M.S. Degree in Recreation Administration (2003). He currently serves as the Director for Facilities and Operations for Campus Recreation. Reggie currently resides in Raleigh, NC with his lovely wife Ebony. He enjoys putting a smile on other's faces, being there "for the people", and helping people reach their leadership potential.
Director of Sport Clubs
Jason is originally from the mountains of North Carolina, but spent much of his youth in Mount Pleasant, SC. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1996 with a B.A. in English, and completed a Master's Degree in Sport Management from Appalachian State University in 2002. Upon graduation, Jason moved to Greeley, Colorado where he was the Assistant Director of Intramural and Club Sports at the University of Northern Colorado. He returned to his alma mater in 2007 as the Director of Sport Clubs. Jason currently resides in Chapel Hill with his wife, Trish, and son, Jackson. He enjoys reading, cooking, playing basketball and attending UNC athletic events.
Director of Marketing & Special Events
Karen was born and raised in the fabulous state of New Jersey. She pursued a B.S. Degree in Journalism and Electronic Media from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Securing a graduate assistantship with UT's Division of RecSports, Karen received a M.S. Degree in Recreation Administration and Sport Management. Upon completion of her graduate degree, Karen worked in Special Events and Development at West Virginia University. She left WVU to gain experience in the private sector, working at Charles Ryan Associates, an integrated marketing communications firm, and Asayo Creative, Inc., a marketing and design firm. Missing working in a university setting, Karen moved to Chapel Hill to start her career with UNC as the Director of Marketing and Special Events. Karen is married to Geoff, and they reside together in Durham.
Director of Outdoor Education
David was born and raised on a cattle ranch in Arizona where he grew up training horses, raising cattle and competing in rodeos around the country. In 1993 David joined the Army and served for three years training horses and performing full honor funeral ceremonies with the Caisson platoon at Arlington National Cemetery. Returning to run the family ranch for several years after his military service proved to be an obstacle in his lifelong pursuit of adventurous outdoor activities, so in 2003 he enrolled at Oklahoma State University where he earned a M.S. Degree in Recreation Administration with an emphasis in Experiential Education and adventure programming. In 2008 David accepted the position of Director of Outdoor Education for UNC-Chapel Hill where he and his dog Zip can be found working with UNC students, staff, faculty and other groups on the Carolina Outdoor Education Center Challenge Course.
Director of Intramural Sports
Justin is a true North Carolinian, growing up in Concord, NC. He received a B.S. Degree in Biological Sciences from NC State University in 2003. After completing his degree, Justin became the Intramural Sports Intern for UNC-Chapel Hill Campus Recreation. From there he climbed the ladder, becoming the Intramural Sports Coordinator for four years, and finally the Intramural Sports Director for Campus Recreation in 2008. He enjoys exercise, food, officiating high school football and basketball, Intramural Sports, Fantasy Sports, and coupon shopping.
Diane joined the Campus Recreation Staff as their Office Manager in August 1996 after retiring from the U.S. Navy, finishing at ROTC-UNC, with 24 years service. Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, Diane decided to stay in NC due to the milder winter weather - yeah right! She has a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree from Campbell University, 2001. Diane enjoys volunteering for U.S. Women's Open Golf tournaments, Be Active NC and the Triangle Affiliate of Susan G. Komen Foundation, as well as the United Service Organization (USO) center at RDU.
Facilities & Operations Coordinator
Joel was born in Chapel Hill, but spent most of his childhood on a small farm in Winterville, NC. He returned to Chapel Hill in 2002 to attend UNC, and shortly after secured a job with the Exercise and Sport Science Department. It was at that time Joel discovered his love for physical fitness and recreation. He spent eight years working in the Fetzer Hall Equipment Room, and officially joined the Campus Recreation staff as the Facilities and Operations Coordinator in 2010. In his free time, Joel spends time with his little girl, Chloe, and loves to be active outdoors, read and watch old movies.
Sport Clubs Coordinator
Mandy Madden was born and raised a Hoosier in Indianapolis, Indiana. She attended Indiana University in Bloomington, IN where she received her B.S. in Kinesiology in 2004. Mandy then proceeded to get her M.A. in Sports Administration from Ball State University in Muncie, IN. While at Ball State, she was a graduate assistant for Recreation Services where she managed intramural sports, sport clubs, facility operations, instructional fitness, and special events. After Ball State in 2006, Mandy pursued her teaching degree and taught high school physical and health education, as well as coached girls' soccer on the club, high school, and state levels. In July 2012, Mandy moved to North Carolina to get back into her true professional passion of campus recreation. She resides in Carrboro.
Facilities Operations Coordinator for South Campus
Will was born in Charlotte, NC, but grew up in High Point, NC. He received a Bachelors degree in Parks Recreation and Tourism Management from North Carolina State University. After college, Will lived in Asheville, NC before returning to High Point where he spent two years as the Coordinator of Recreation Services at High Point University. Will joined the UNC Campus Recreation staff in 2012.
Expedition Program Manager
Dave graduated from North Carolina State University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in Parks, Recreation & Tourism Management, concentrating in Natural Resources. After a NOLS Mountaineering Course in 1993, Dave worked as a Lead Instructor for the North Carolina Outward Bound School. In 1998 Dave--hired as the Expedition Program Manager--began the Expedition Program for The Carolina Outdoor Education Center. The program has been accredited by the Association for Experiential Education since 2002. He currently resides in Johnston County with his wife, Melinda, and son, Jack.
Tori Cheek Hooker
Intramural Sports Coordinator
Tori was born and raised in North Carolina, and graduated in May 2007 from UNC-Chapel Hill with a B.A. in Exercise & Sport Science, with a concentration in Sports Administration. Soon after, she became the Intramural Sports Intern with Carolina Campus Recreation. After Tori’s internship ended, Campus Rec hired her on full-time as the Intramural Sports Coordinator. She received her M.S. in Parks & Recreation Management in August 2011 from UNC-Greensboro. She currently resides Morrisville with her husband CJ, son Amare and cat Jazzy.
Climbing Program Coordinator
DJ is a graduate of Appalachian State University with a Bachelor of Science in Recreation and Parks Management concentrating in Outdoor Experiential Education. As an avid climber, DJ has participated in multiple high elevation climbing expeditions throughout the United States, Europe, and Africa. He holds numerous certifications with the American Mountain Guide Association, is a certified Single Pitch Professional Climbing Instructor, as well as a certified Climbing Wall Association Instructor Provider. Through his many experiences working as a mountain guide and a youth climbing coach DJ has developed a deep passion for helping others to learn safe climbing practices and expanding their horizons in the sport. DJ worked with the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission and UNC Health care as the Climbing Programs Coordinator before joining the UNC Chapel Hill team.
Head Athletic Trainer for Sport Clubs
Meghan Fulton joined the UNC Sports Medicine and Campus Recreation staff in 2010 as the Head Athletic Trainer for Sport Clubs. Her primary responsibility is delivery of sports medicine services to athletes participating in sport clubs, and she also serves as a liason between Campus Health Services and Campus Recreation. UNC Campus Recreation has established themselves as a leader in Sports Medicine services provided to sport clubs. More information can be found here.
Fulton is a 2006 graduate of Northeastern University, where she earned her B.S. in Athletic Training. Following her undergraduate degree, Fulton earned her M.A. in Exercise and Sports Science with a specialization in Athletic Training in 2008 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Fulton returned to UNC after spending two years at the University of Richmond.
Fulton enjoys fitness, yoga, and attending Tar Heel athletic events. A native of Sandwich, MA, Fulton currently resides in Chapel Hill with her husband, Grant.
Elizabeth "Liz" Walz
Fitness Graduate Assistant
Liz is originally from the East Bay in Northern California. She received a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Biology from the University of California, Davis. She is currently working towards her Master of Art in Exercise Physiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is the current graduate assistant for group fitness, as well as a teaching assistant for Lifetime Fitness. She is passionate about all things Campus Recreation and she hopes to pursue a career in this field! To reach these goals she is a member of the 2013-2014 NIRSA Assembly.
Fitness Graduate Assistant
Jordan is a first year Master’s student, specializing in Exercise Physiology. Jordan was born and raised in Hillsborough, North Carolina. She graduated from Elon University in 2012 with a major in Exercise Science and double minor in Neuroscience and Chemistry. She was a high jumper on Elon’s Varsity Track and Field team. Jordan is one of three Graduate Assistants in Campus Recreation as part of Employee Wellness and is also a Lifetime Fitness Program Teaching Assistant. In her free time, Jordan enjoys participating in anything athletic and competitive from road cycling to tennis to basketball and football. She is very excited to be a part of the Chapel Hill team!
Fitness Graduate Assistant
Hailee was born and raised in Florida, but has lived in North Carolina since 2005. She received her Associate of Science degree from Wake Technical Community College in 2009, and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise and Sports Science from Meredith College in 2012. She is now in her last year of the Exercise Physiology Master’s Program here at UNC-CH. Hailee joined Campus Recreation in August 2012 as the Employee Wellness Graduate Assistant, and transitioned to the Functional Movement and Fitness Center Graduate Assistant in the summer of 2013. Hailee is a certified Health Fitness Specialist (ACSM), Group Fitness Instructor (ACE), and Health Coach (ACE). Hailee enjoys meeting new people, trying new things, and staying active.
Tyler is from the town of Lake Norman, North Carolina, but now resides in Chapel Hill. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2012 with a B.A. in Exercise and Sport Science with a concentration in Sport Administration and a minor in American History. He has worked with UNC Campus Recreation since his first year at Carolina, starting as an entry level employee, working his way to student leadership before he graduated. Tyler enjoys being outside as much as possible, hiking, boating, and playing sports, and spending time with his family and dog, Harley Mae.
Marketing and Special Events Intern
Colleen was born and raised in Asheville, North Carolina. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a dual degree in Spanish and Global Studies in 2013. Colleen became involved with Campus Recreation through the Group Fitness Program, but became involved with other areas including fitness consulting, and Marketing and Special Events where she now works as an intern. During her time at Carolina Colleen helped found Embody Carolina - an organization dedicated to preparing students to serve as compassionate and effective allies for those struggling with eating disorders. She is passionate about promoting holistic perspectives on health that prioritize genuine enjoyment and physical vitality. She is a hopeless fro-yo addict and loves distance athletics.
Meagan was born and raised a Tar Heel in Goldston, North Carolina. She attended Appalachian State University and graduated with a B.S. in Exercise Science in December 2012. She now works as an Intramural Sports Intern with Carolina Campus Recreation. She hopes to learn and gain experience in her internship and plans to attend graduate school to pursue a Master’s Degree in Sports Management to lead to a career at the collegiate level. She currently resides in Goldston with her family and enjoys watching and participating in sports, baking, singing, laughing, and going snowboarding.
Intramural Sports Intern
Michael was born and raised South of Atlanta, and graduated from the University of West Georgia with a BBA in Marketing. At UWG Michael was an Intramural Sports supervisor for two years - officiating an array of sports. He was an active member of Georgia High School Association where he officiated both middle and high school basketball games. Michael is “extremely excited” to begin his internship here at UNC and to gain experience with Intramural Sports and Recreation. Michael is an avid Atlanta Braves and Falcons fan. When Michael isn’t following Atlanta athletics, he enjoys working out, officiating, traveling, watching movies, and spending time with his family, girlfriend, and friends.
Outdoor Education Center Intern
Rebekah was born in Durango, Colorado but spent most of her youth in the mountains of Western North Carolina. She is a recent graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill with a Bachelors degree in Communication Studies and Art History minor. After completing the UNC Outdoor Leadership Series in January of 2013, she was brought on as an intern for the Carolina Outdoor Education Center. She currently assists with administrative tasks and program coordination for both Challenge Course and Expedition Programs. Rebekah currently lives in Carrboro with her cat, Toast.
Athletic Training Graduate Assistant
Alexis is orginally from Sterling Height, Michigan and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training/Sports Medicine from Central Michigan University in 2012. Alexis is currently working on her Master of Arts in Exercise and Sports Science with a concentration in Athletic Training. In addition to working with the UNC sport club athletes, Alexis also works with the UNC varsity men's lacrosse team. She is also working on a Master's thesis on airway access techniques in men's lacrosse athletes.
Jaclyn "Jackie" Stucker
Athletic Training Graduate Assistant
Jackie grew up in Upstate New York near the Finger Lakes Region in a small town called Skaneateles, NY. She graduated from Boston University in 2013 with her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training. She is currently a first-year Master's student in the Exercise and Sport Science program with a specialization in Athletic Training. She works as a graduate assistant athletic training with both the varsity gymnastics team and the sport clubs teams and is also a teaching assistant for Lifetime Fitness.
